Close on the heels of the rape of a doctor in a Kolkata hospital comes this news report in The Goan on August 17 of sexual harassment in a police training school at Valpoi. Many more such cases may be going unreported. Where are we headed, what is happening in our country? Do we aspire to be the rape capital of the world or are we already? According to the news report, the two culprits - the hawaldars - have been transferred but no disciplinary action has been initiated against them.
Is one wondering why rapes and sexual molestation continue unabated in our country? Well, it is because the culprits manage to get away lightly. It is only when drastic punishment rather some would say, punishment equal to the crime is dealt to the culprits, would one see some semblance of sanity among these frustrated menfolk. They need to understand that every woman is somebody’s daughter, somebody’s sister, somebody’s wife, somebody’s mother!
