The RSS-BJP suggested the removal of the two words in 2015 by the Union Government floating an advertisement of the Preamble of our Constitution minus these vital words. The general reaction forced them to back off. Now they have highlighted the Emergency, undoubtedly one of our blackest periods where the Constitution was subverted by a powerful Prime Minister during which period the 42nd Amendment was inserted. Clever ploy now but way back in 1973, a 13-judge bench of the Supreme Court ruled that the secular character of the Constitution was part of its “basic structure which is of supreme importance”, and “cannot by any form of amendment be destroyed”. Even without those words it only re- enforces the soul of the Constitution which is by itself basically socialist and secular. It has stood the test of time for 78 years! Trying to enforce a majority Hindu rashtra like the Muslim brotherhood hegemony being pursued by Turkey and some nations must not be allowed to kill our unique unity in our myriad flourishing diversity and noisy democracy which is the envy of the world.
