India particularly Goa in this context, seems to be blindly aping the capitalistic/materialistic culture of the Western World.
In Colva, this disturbing mentality is on a fast track. Quite a few in the current generation are happily selling prized ancestral properties to acquire fancy apartments and luxury cars.
Then there are real estate sharks and even specific local panchayat members all ready to extract their share many times illegally! None of these selfish parties care about the damage their action is causing to the environment and resources of the village.
It was unthinkable that Colva would have water issues. Wells now run dry faster every year and the government supply is irregular.
The courts have put some restrictions on the Panchayat on issuing new construction licenses but we cannot bank on courts to come to our help all the time.
Time for Colvenkars to have a “change in mindset” so as to prevent the destructive transformation of Colva!
