Fire accidents in bigger cities and that too in multi-storeyed buildings cause extensive human deaths and damage as we witnessed in Delhi. Inferno of enormous proportion causes extensive damage as well with no cost for human lives. Internal security in high-rise buildings has been taken for a ride resulting in major fire accidents in Delhi and Mumbai.
The take it easy policy and the single-minded approach of making profits are leaving new buildings with no escape route at the time of fires. Moreover, the roads are cramped and overcrowded thus preventing the entry of fire services to enter the area. The narrow roads prevent the entry of fire engines to reach in time and start the relief and rescue operations. Lack of fire audit gives scope for major fires in these two cities.
Such was the fury of the fire in the four-storey building in Delhi that rescuers were still frantically searching for survivors, with 29 people remaining unaccounted for. The sorry state of affairs as the distraught relatives gathered outside the building in the hope of getting survival news about their near and dear ones. But the hope that some of their relatives could still be alive in smouldering embers was ebbing by the hour. The one entry-exit point created chaos and confusion and the resultant loss of dear lives.
