Years back the Mapusa Tar river was in the news for being heavily polluted, the river water smelling, dead fish floating up and now growth of the water hyacinth. Surprisingly as per the news the Water Resource Department (WRD) just a month ago had cleared the wild water hyacinth with machines at the cost of Rs 10 lakhs but the weeds have returned.
Needless to say the river has formed at least 1 1/3rd metre silt with garbage, vegetation and other material etc. Apart on both sides of the river from Green Park to National Highway crossing mangroves have grown wild and their branches are leaning right in the water. A source says that the Water Resource Department (WRD) is planning to re-draw estimate to remove all the wild weeds from Green Park to Moira Bridge. It will be much better and economical if the WRD draws up an estimate to de-silt or dredge the full river so that all the wild weeds which have taken deep root in the silt will be cleared and will yield good results so that Mapusa River will no longer be besieged by weeds.
