Justice DY Chandrachud known for his staunch defence of right to free speech recently gave full vent to his angst caused by the media's misguided criticism based on disproportionately twisted facts.
He was pained by reports that the SC bench of which he was a part was deliberately delaying hearing on a case related to attacks on Christians and their institutions in the country when the fact was that the Hon'ble justice was down with Covid on the date proceedings were to commence.
The CJI NV Ramana was also miffed with the media and accused it of crossing all limits; playing judge, jury and executioner. He advised the media to measure its words and advocated self-regulation to ensure that it doesn't invite interference from the government or the courts.
The media seems to have become a force in itself, this tendency to project itself as omnipotent needs to be reined in.
