A lawyer's yet unproven claim that a shivling has been found in the wazu khana (ablution pond) of the Gyanvapi mosque during the ongoing lower court ordered survey of the premises (which itself is in contravention of a 1991 Supreme Court order on Places of Worship Act ) has set the cat among the pigeons. A partisan electronic media and social communication platforms are lit and abuzz with hashtags and heated TV debates about this supposedly great 'discovery'. The fact that the area is now mandatorily sealed does not prevent the Hindutva right-wing elements from laying claim to the entire temple-mosque complex. In a hardening of stance, the Anjuman Intejamia Masjid, one of the respondents in the case has also filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the lower court's order to facilitate a survey. We Hindus have @ 25 lakh temples in India in addition to our homes to pray in. Why is that of late we have been sighting our Gods only in masjids. This is not going to end well for the country; welcome to the New India of the 17th century where regress is progress.
