Woeful neglect by PWD

The news report ‘18 yrs on, Porvorim overhead water reservoir lies unused’ (TGE, Mar 7) should hopefully open the eyes of the PWD to their failure to repair the leakage of the overhead water tank in Defence Colony for the past 18 years, thereby causing a lot of hardship to the residents of Phase II of the colony. It is important to note that overhead water tanks are primarily meant to serve as balancing reservoirs when water pressures in the mainline are low, and people at the tail end of the distribution networks receive hardly any water as a result.

As this was not done for the past 18 years, residents of Phase II were put at the mercy of water tanker operators, who are known to capitalise on the situation and charge exorbitant rates that are often unaffordable. The matter was aggravated during the repairs to the Tillari dam canal. It is hoped that the new water department proposed to be set up in the PWD will improve the situation.
