AAP defections: Law must curb political opportunism

This refers to the editorial, ‘AAP’s high moral stand swept away in power play’ (TGE, April 25). An informative, thought-provoking editorial. This defection of AAP MPs from the Rajya Sabha may have been within the provisions of the Anti-Defection Law; however, do such defectors give a thought to the party that nominates them, or to the electorate that elects them? One wonders when defections from one party to another, for whatever reason, will stop. It seems politics in our country is in the pits. There is no ethics or morality left in politics anymore. At the end of the day, such defections leave behind bitterness and a sense of betrayal.
It is time the anti-defection law is amended to provide that those wishing to defect should first resign from the party and then seek re-election. That is too much to expect, perhaps?
