It is shocking that the Goa Police have finally registered an FIR against suspended PSI Nilesh Sirvoikar for the alleged custodial assault on Edberg Pereira of Navelim. Earlier, police claimed that the victim, said to be intoxicated, injured himself after falling. Even if he was misbehaving, what justified chaining his legs and brutally assaulting him? Such barbaric conduct raises serious questions about the training and mindset of our police force.
These very officers, who hesitated to act against unruly foreigners on the Porvorim highway some years ago, seem to display their strength only on innocent Goan youths. It appears some cops are more interested in serving political masters and shielding outsiders than upholding law and order. The Chief Minister and higher authorities must take responsibility for this collapse in police discipline. Merely registering an FIR is not enough ” PSI Sirvoikar must be arrested and permanently dismissed. Action should also be taken against the Margao PI and South Goa SP for attempting to cover up the case. Goa deserves a police force that protects, not terrorizes, its people.
