This is with reference to the report, "Indian Sign Language needs recognition: Joshi - The Goan Everyday September 5, 2023." That was an informative, insightful write-up on the suffering of those who cannot hear a single word and for that matter cannot express their feelings verbally. I can very well understand their feelings as I too have brothers who are deaf, one of them profoundly deaf. Prasad Joshi is right when he says awareness about the deaf and sign language is important. Unlike blindness, being deaf & mute is a disability which is not visible. On the outside, they seem like normal people. The general perception is, all deaf people are dumb. When my two youngest brothers were first detected with this issue, the teachers at the special school stated that they are not dumb. It is because they cannot hear they are forced to use gestures & signs. And so, the school adopted the use of hearing aids with the help of which they were able to complete their school education. They need to be handled with care.
