An individual cannot hold cricket to ransom

Pakistan’s Interior Minister and ACC/PCB Chairman, Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi, has allegedly seized the Asia Cup 2025 trophy in Dubai, unlawfully keeping it despite India’s victory.

The Indian team, led by Suryakumar Yadav, had defeated Pakistan by five wickets but refused to accept the trophy from Naqvi, citing his anti-India rhetoric and provocative online behaviour. His act is being condemned as a serious breach of sportsmanship and a threat to cricket’s global integrity.

The trophy rightfully belongs to the winning team, not an individual. Naqvi’s actions, especially as a government minister, have brought embarrassment to Pakistan.

He is also reportedly related to Irum Asim, wife of Field Marshal Asim Munir, whose controversial promotion after Pakistan’s military defeat sparked ridicule.

In a bizarre twist, despite being mocked as the “Trophy Thief,” Naqvi is set to receive the Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Excellence Gold Medal for taking the trophy. This incident underscores Pakistan’s growing loss of credibility and sets a dangerous precedent for future international sporting events.
