Covid-19 infections and death rates around the world make for chilling reading. However what is most disconcerting is that the so-called developed world has suffered the bulk of the pandemic tolls.
The total world toll of infections and deaths is 28.8 crore and 54.4 lakh respectively. It may be stressed that vaccinations in certain countries have reached the stage of booster doses being administered, hence why is there such an anomalous spread?
Out of these, the US which is a super power has seen 5.48 crore infections and 8.24 lakh deaths so far. Brazil and Russia too have a whopping infections and fatalities. UK which is an advanced country has seen 1.29 crore infections so far and 1.49 lakh lives have been lost.
It is an irony that developed countries with very sophisticated and advanced health care systems should have faced the brunt of infections and fatalities.
Reasons why such high infection rate and fatalities is since these countries do not follow SOPs such as avoiding crowding, social distancing, wearing of face masks.
