Anti-defection law needs to be amended to stem the rot

Is it not an irony that in India’s most literate state some political outfits are trying to fool people with devious political stunts?

One party claims that it will guarantee its MLAs will not defect and to this effect, it will obtain an affidavit from them. That affidavit will not have the value of even toilet paper as it would not have any legal standing or be binding on a candidate if elected.

As long as the anti-defection law is not amended to plug the loopholes in it, the malaise of defections will continue undeterred. And we have over the years seen that defections have hit every political party with the one in power and loaded with money to buy MLAs having an upper hand.

Another party is now deceitfully getting people to register for a Griha Laxmi card on the false premise that every woman will automatically get a monthly direct transfer of Rs 5,000. And people are flocking not knowing that they are being conned. That party would have to first get elected and devise such a scheme officially after which everyone entitled could be a beneficiary of the scheme.

And nothing more needs to be said on that sham fast unto death at Old Goa just before the feast of St Francis Xavier. All this sort of misleading and hoodwinking the voters is in utter bad taste and only shows how low the political parties can stoop.

Will the new DIG look into such unnecessary expenses? No sign of pothole-free roads pothole-free roads till…
