India is proud of its unity in diversity and is one of the most populated countries in the world. Yet recent incidents during Christmas celebrations have raised serious concerns. In many places, peace was disturbed when radical elements targeted Christian gatherings. While the Prime Minister attended a church event, attacks were reported elsewhere. Christmas decorations were damaged, churches were vandalised, and people who had come to pray were threatened.
Such incidents were reported from several BJP-ruled states. Videos on social media showed shocking scenes of hooliganism. In one case, a woman leader was seen assaulting a visually impaired Christian woman while the police stood by helplessly. In another video, a man was heard saying, “This is a Hindu country and you cannot celebrate Christmas here.” Even poor vendors selling Santa caps and decorations were harassed.
Earlier, similar actions were seen against Muslims. Now it is spreading to Christians and other minorities. Yet, no strong action is taken against those who create fear and spoil harmony. This makes us wonder whether minorities are truly safe in India today and whether we are still living in a secular and democratic country.
