Members of right-wing organisations such as the VHP and Bajrang Dal were again seen disrupting Christian gatherings, charity events and Christmas celebrations in several BJP-ruled states. Videos shared widely on social media show people interrupting prayer meetings, stopping Christmas parties and even questioning or harassing small vendors selling Santa caps and other festive items. In some places, Christmas decorations were removed after claims of religious conversion.
At the same time, Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended a Christmas service at the Cathedral Church of the Redemption in Delhi on Thursday, a move that has drawn mixed reactions in the context of these incidents.
Many citizens are asking whether people in the country are still free to practise the religion of their choice without fear. If the government is serious about protecting minority communities, it must act firmly against those who spread fear and disturb communal harmony.
