This horrific incident has exposed the long-standing illegalities and negligence thriving under political patronage. For years, unsafe and illegal businesses have been allowed to function freely, protected by officials and political leaders. Fire safety norms, licenses, and basic regulations are ignored until tragedy strikes. Only after lives are lost do authorities announce inquiries and investigations. It is alarming that even senior ruling party leaders such as Michael Lobo and Suresh Parulekar have openly spoken about corruption within the present government, yet those who speak the truth face punishment. This raises serious questions about democracy within political parties. Once elected, many representatives seem to believe voters have given them unchecked power to amass wealth and influence. Investigative agencies appear quick to act against opposition leaders but remain silent when allegations involve ruling party members. The harsh reality today is that corruption continues as long as one does not get caught. “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” increasingly feels reduced to “Self ka Vikas.” Citizens must demand accountability before more lives are lost.
