Stray dog population has been increasing by leaps and bounds in the state. The recent incident involving a Russian woman who was chased and bitten by a pack of strays on the Benaulim beach stretch, should be an eye opener for authorities. This incident along with others will prove to be detrimental for the reputation of safe tourism of the state. It does not augur well for the scope of value added services in the tourism industry, and allied sectors. There should be a system in place to impound stray dogs and lodge them in a shelter, after giving them prescribed sterilization and vaccinations doses. Some of these strays have resorted to chasing an odd motor biker scaring the day lights out of him, in the bargain leading to accidents. There have been many biting incidents in the past on Benaulim beach of foreigners, but nothing beyond concrete steps and no coordinated effort by the authorities to pass a resolution to curtail and bring a speedy end to this menace. The spread of rabies will increase if not controlled by reducing the canine population.
