In what has come as a pleasant surprise the banyan tree which was uprooted from St Inez during the Smart City road works and transplanted at the Campal football ground has reportedly sprouted shoots.
Fresh new leaves and roots were seen growing on the tree giving it a new lease of life. Nature has once again shown resilience to human mindless malevolence. The tree has survived the scorching summer heat.
This was possible because the entire tree was covered with a green cloth and was watered regularly with utmost care by the authorities. The particular banyan tree was translocated because it invited widespread condemnation both from nature lovers and activists.
It is pertinent to note that activists recently red-flagged the ongoing operation of trimming trees along Margao ring road between Comba subway and the Colva road insisting that the contractor has cut down many trees along the road.
The sprouting of shoots of the banyan tree at Campal should serve as a wake-up call to translocate trees instead of cutting them down.
