It is shocking to note that a bar has been allowed to be opened inside the historic Fort Aguada. The Aguada jail has a rich history where many freedom fighters who had fought for Goa’s Liberation were incarcerated. Having a bar operating at this historic fort will be an insult to the martyrs who laid down their lives for Goa’s Liberation. The fort was originally constructed in 1612 and was a reference point for vessels coming from Europe at that time. The fort is so large that it envelops the entire peninsula at the southwestern tip of Bardez. Built on the mouth of Mandovi River it is a well-preserved seventeenth century fort along with a lighthouse. It is sad to note that children of freedom fighters have threatened a satyagraha if the government does not step in to shut the bar opened inside the Aguada Fort. Allowing a bar to operate inside the fort will set a wrong precedent. The government needs to intervene immediately and take necessary steps to disallow such business activities at Fort Aguada.
