Brace for heat waves, stay hydrated


India is bracing for blistering heat waves according to the latest IMD forecasts. These heat waves are looking worse with significant mitigation of climate change.  

It's fair to think that almost every heat wave that we see right now has some influence from global warming. The high temperatures can be a death sentence for many of the country’s poorest people.  

This hot weather is also likely to put pressure on the electricity grid as people use various appliances, including ACs to keep cool. People should stay hydrated, drink lot of water, avoid direct sunlight especially between 11 am and 3 pm. 

Those who are working under direct sunlight must take regulars break so that they can prevent situations of heat exhaustion and heat cramps which may lead to heat stroke.  

Awareness should be prepared by authorities and other modes of publicity on how to deal with extreme heat conditions.

Restore rail concession to senior citizens

Railway concession for senior citizens was withdrawn during the pandemic under the specious argument that it was necessary to "safeguard" them against Covid. The concession was one of the very few privileges which senior citizens enjoyed. The pandemic is now much like a flu but the concession has not been restored. Nevertheless, we senior citizens enjoy some unique privileges (sic).
