Reportedly, the billionaire Elon Musk has moved from the Democrats to the Republican party to protect and advance his personal and business interests. Let us appreciate that in countries like the US, business people (especially the rich, super-rich and ultra-rich) and corporate houses openly support one or the other political party. This could be in the form of personal appearances at the hustings, huge donations, advertisements, interviews etc. They do not fear the backlash in the event the party that they support does not win the elections. It is doubtful if the government that they did not favour would hound them with various investigative agencies. In contrast, in several countries the above categories of people and corporates remain safely ensconced and sit on the fence. They contribute in different proportions to major political parties and irrespective of which one wins, they sidle up to bag major contracts and outright buy or swallow companies, factories, government enterprises and so forth. This is a win-win situation for them and the winning party, but a joke played by taking the citizens for a ride.
