The superspecialty block at GMC which is expected to be functional in the next few months is slated to have a dedicated neuroscience catheterization laboratory which will treat stroke patients.
This shall be a boon to heart patients in Goa who otherwise had to travel to Mumbai or Bangalore for lifesaving procedures. Over the past two months GMC has started initiating complex neuro interventions including digital subtraction angiograms of the brain and spine, carotid artery stenting, vertebral ostial stenting and embolisation.
Mechanical thrombectomy for acute stroke and aneurysm coiling are on the cards too.
This move combined with the financial aid scheme for cancer patients announced recently by the Governor shall go a long way in alleviating the suffering of Goans, maybe it could give rise to 'medical tourism' as our state is a more affordable destination compared to metropolises.
The economy too would get a shot in the arm. The government should seriously look at setting up tertiary/ quarternary care hospitals instead of wasting money on reviving imaginary temples destroyed by the Portuguese and other such brainless pursuits.
