The popular and most used ferry wharf routes of Panaji-Betim, St. Pedro-Divar and Ribandar-Chorao are at most times chock-a-block with people and vehicles. It is an ordeal to walk or drive carefully because of hordes of people and tens of vehicles. The ramp keeps moving due to the currents in the River Mandovi. To add to these woes during low and high tide periods, it is a challenge to manoeuvre vehicles to enter/exit from the ferryboats. The chaos builds up when people waiting at the wharf want to board the ferryboat while those onboard stand at the ramp to disembark. This state of bedlam could be avoided if the River Navigation Department (RND) erects steel dividers at the centre of the ferry wharfs and have display boards to “Keep Left,” for passengers and motorists waiting to get on or off the ferryboats. For nuisance creators who may not follow the rules, the RND could employ its or hired personnel to monitor the situation and install CCTV cameras. Such crowd-control measures would help to streamline the process of embarkation-disembarkation and help avoid mishaps at the ferry wharfs.
