Most of the media reports how outsiders come to Goa and trash our beautiful land. But if one looks within, one will observe that we ourselves contribute in no small measure towards the desecration of our state. Open dumping of garbage, non-segregation of waste, industrial effluent and kitchen grease from restaurants being released unchecked into our rivers and other water bodies, unregulated cattle sheds in coastal villages dumping animal waste on the roads and what have you. Of course, through all this the government sleeps the sleep of the dead, penalties and fines are only in breach and the regulatory agencies shirk their responsibilities. They say charity begins at home, maybe we should first learn to keep our own home clean and then take stringent action against outsiders.
