Residents of Mormugao are once again suffering due to the persistent foul smell emanating from coal handling operations. A few days ago, along with our MLA, we submitted a memorandum signed by thousands of locals highlighting the serious health concerns caused by this issue. Though the authorities assured us that corrective measures would be taken, the foul smell resurfaced within two days. The odour is reportedly caused by thermal and steam coal imported from Indonesia and transported to Karnataka. This coal has an inherent tendency for spontaneous combustion, generating heat and emitting an unbearable smell. Sprinkling water has proven ineffective in controlling the problem. The coal is dumped in the open and later transported by rail, exposing residents to continuous pollution. Coal handling cannot continue at the cost of public health. The authorities and the Pollution Control Board must act immediately. If corrective steps are not taken, residents will be left with no option but to intensify their protest.
