Compensate victims of Smart City works

The work for the new sewage system under the Smart City project began more than two years ago. During this time, the extensive road digging turned Panaji into a hazardous zone. Tragically, at least four to five people lost their lives due to various accidents caused by these works.

The Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited (IPSCDL) should have allocated at least Rs 1 crore to compensate the victims of these Smart City works. Typically, in such organised projects, families of deceased victims receive compensation of Rs 5 to Rs 10 lakh, while those with major injuries are given Rs 50,000.

It is shocking that, to date, the victims of these accidents have not been compensated. This goes against standard practices followed across India, where compensation is promptly provided in cases of fatalities caused by public works-related mishaps.

The authorities must act immediately to ensure that the families of those who lost their loved ones are compensated without further delay. It is essential to provide justice to these families and address the negligence that led to their suffering.
