There is confusion among Goans regarding the recent statement about a 20% hike in electricity tariff. At first, it was said that the hike would apply to domestic consumers. Later, it was clarified that the increase would mainly affect industrial and non-domestic users, and that the higher tariff would be charged only for power used during peak hours, from 5 pm to 9 am. In most homes, electricity use is low during the day as only essential appliances like refrigerators are running. However, after 5 pm, families need lights, fans and sometimes air conditioners. This is when consumption naturally goes up. So, the main concern is the 20% hike during these peak hours. There is also a plan to install smart meters to monitor usage. On the other hand, there are industries with outstanding electricity dues running into crores of rupees. These amounts are not being recovered fully. Yet, domestic consumers who pay their bills regularly face strict action if they miss even one payment, including disconnection within a month. Once again, it feels like the burden falls on the middle class and the poor, while big defaulters get time and relaxation. Street lights too need better monitoring, as many do not function at all. These issues should be addressed before increasing power tariffs in the name of controlling wastage.
