A 45-year-old patient undergoing treatment for cancer at the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim reportedly attempted to end his life by jumping from the first floor of the GMC building on Saturday morning.
The patient escaped with minor injuries to the leg and was taken back to the ward. It must be said that hospitals, including government hospitals, need to have a full-time counsellor.
Counselling services are a significant part of the health care system, and these services need to be incorporated into the health care delivery system.
Every patient should have access to counselling services. Counselling helps one deal with issues like depression, anxiety, stress, and many more. Patient counselling gives individual attention to the problem of the patient.
It involves guidance and problem solving to help the patients to better manage their health problems. Patients who are terminally ill with no chance of survival are most in need of counselling. It can help them prepare themselves for a peaceful death.
Even doctors and healthcare staff working in hospitals under stressful conditions could be in need of counselling.
