The world is in the grip of the Covid pandemic for close to two years now. India, including Goa, too was completely devastated by the second wave. After the Covid graph started slowing down, Goa has another challenge at hand -- how to control the dengue cases in Vasco, Panaji, Ponda and few other places. The water-logging near construction sites and the stagnation of dirty water are worrisome. The problem is that all the cities have garbage issues and this leads to mosquito breeding. The health department has given instructions to all municipalities and other local bodies to take precautionary measures to fight the disease. That’s not enough. Those concerned have to become more practical and start cleaning the nullahs and gutters and also start fogging operations. People at large need to awaken and strive to keep their surroundings clean and clear mosquito breeding spots. The authorities should also start fining the hotel owners and construction contractors who do not keep proper drainage system. Only prevention and care will reduce the dengue infection.
