Crimes are rising, but the government claims that police solve most cases and arrest the accused. Yet, many offenders are not being punished, which encourages others to commit crimes without fear. The recent arrest of those accused in the brutal attack on social activist Rama Kankonkar must be dealt with firmly. People no longer fear the law because the police are not empowered, and justice is delayed. Ordinary citizens are living in fear due to increasing crime.
Goa has one of the lowest conviction rates in the country. Public prosecutors blame this on weak and unscientific investigations. The Supreme Court, through various commissions, including the Julio Ribeiro Commission, highlighted serious gaps in policing and called for reforms. But the government has ignored these. Unless strict measures are taken to make offenders fear the law, crime will continue unchecked and law and order will collapse.
