As a resident of Goa, I am troubled by the implications for both the safety and the reputation of Goa. The recent statements by the Chief Minister regarding the increasing incidents of rapes and murders in Goa are deeply concerning and demand immediate attention. There has been a rise in crime in Goa, partly due to the influx of individuals with potentially violent behaviour into the state's workforce, particularly in the tourism sector. The practice of employing workers without proper verification is clearly contributing to this problem. As per news reports around 43 cases in 2023, and 106 cases of rapes in 2014 were registered with Goa police. The following solutions could help prevent such crimes: increasing police presence in tourist spots and using surveillance cameras to deter criminals and assist law enforcement in quickly responding to incidents; involving local communities in maintaining safety; and educating both locals and tourists on crime prevention to enhance security. Additionally, when workers come from other states, it is crucial to collaborate with those states to conduct background checks. This helps prevent individuals with criminal records from entering and causing trouble.
