Mandating use of canvas shoes welcome move

In a recent circular Directorate of Education requires all students in government, aided, unaided, primary, secondary, higher secondary, and special schools to wear canvas shoes as part of their school uniforms. This initiative is a commendable effort to reduce the environmental impact associated with leather and synthetic footwear, which are known to involve harmful chemicals in their production. As Director of Education Shailesh Zingde rightly pointed out in his circular, the protection of our environment should be implemented as much as it is advocated. The production of leather certainly comes at a significant environmental cost, utilizing highly toxic chemicals that can be harmful to human skin.  By mandating the use of canvas shoes in schools, we can significantly diminish the reliance on these toxic materials. Canvas shoes, made from eco-friendly materials, are not only durable and more resistant to wear and tear, but they are also comfortable and relatively inexpensive. Importantly, they do not pose any harm to the environment or the students. Additionally, canvas shoes are already prescribed for sports purposes and can easily be integrated into everyday wear. I believe this initiative is an important step in promoting sustainability within our educational institutions.
