NITI Aayog has recently made an important claim about poverty in the country citing the Consumer Expenditure Survey. Poverty in the country has reduced by five per cent. The survey was conducted by the National Sample Survey Office as about one lakh seven thousand families in urban areas and one lakh fifty-five thousand families in rural areas were selected.
Along with this reduction in poverty, per capita monthly expenditure has doubled compared to 2011-2012. It has been mentioned in the report that the per capita monthly expenditure in the urban section is £6459 and the expenditure in the rural section is £3773. People in both urban and rural areas have achieved economic progress. Due to this, the race for development is going on.
Compared to 2011-2012, the gap has reduced now. It has now come to 71 per cent from 84 per cent. Especially in the year 2004, this difference was almost 91 per cent. There have been changes in lifestyle in both these areas. As the purchasing power of both the regions increases, they seem to be spending more on milk, fruits, and vegetables.
Overall, this survey has brought out a big issue regarding the reduction of poverty. This is the result of the economic progress that has been going on under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi in the last ten years. It is not a problem to hope that the gap between villages and cities will decrease in the next period.
