Defending right to practice one's faith

The recent intervention by the Supreme Court of India in staying criminal proceedings against Father Vincent Pereira is a welcome step in upholding constitutional freedoms. The case, arising from an FIR in Uttar Pradesh, raises important concerns about the interpretation of religious expression in a diverse society. The priest was accused of hurting sentiments by stating that Christianity is the true religion. However, such expressions are not uncommon across faiths, where religious leaders often affirm their own beliefs. In a secular democracy like India, the right to profess and express one’s faith peacefully is guaranteed under the Constitution. The Court’s decision to stay further proceedings highlights the need for careful scrutiny in matters involving religious speech. It is equally important that laws are not misused to target individuals without substantial evidence of wrongdoing. Respect for all religions must go hand in hand with protecting the fundamental right to freely practice and express one’s faith.
