Burglars have reportedly targeted the church in Panaji and St Cruz. While cash of Rs 3000 was reportedly stolen from the Panaji church, there was no cash kept in the office of the St Cruz church.
It appears that burglars are taking advantage of the incessant rains and the fact that most of the churches do not have adequate security during the night.
It is pertinent to note that most churches do have CCTVs. However it must be said that CCTVs can assist in detection of a crime but it plays a very small role in preventing a burglary.
Most of the churches are not guarded during the night-time. What is necessary is for the churches to deploy security personnel during the night, especially during the rainy season. Security personnel need to be deployed outside the church and outside the church office.
These security personnel should be armed with a torch and a cane and take frequent rounds around the church premises during the night.
