The quaint, beautiful village of Benaulim has begun to resemble a dump of late. With garbage being stored for months in front of the panchayat building which houses a milk distribution centre, a post office and an ambulance stand; rodents, pigs, mosquitoes and dogs are having a free run of the place. The newly installed baling machine is also back under wraps for reasons difficult to fathom.
The whole area stinks to high heaven when it rains. Add to that the menace of stray cattle and feral dogs roaming the roads with impunity, and you have a recipe for disaster. A couple of dairies in the village release their buffaloes and cows in the mornings and evenings for grazing.
Consequently, the roads get splattered with cow dung and buffalo patties, which no civic agency deigns to clean. Besides, the moving herd leads to traffic jams and vehicular accidents. I would request the panchayat or government authorities to seriously look into the matter and take suitable remedial action before the village turns into a pigsty.
