The swearing in ceremony of the Chief Minister and the Cabinet is a State function traditionally held at the Raj Bhavan. And now with a new Durbar hall at the Goa Raj Bhavan that can accommodate a thousand persons there could be no reason to hold it elsewhere.
It is a solemn ceremony which cannot be reduced to a public meeting or a political affair of the ruling party.
Despite the State coffers being in dire straits with even the Senior Citizens not receiving their monthly payments, it is preposterous that the BJP has decided to have the ceremony as a party mela at the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium.
Prudence would demand that the new government shun away from such extravagant spending and get on with the task of humbly and honestly serving the people of Goa for which they have been elected.
A swearing in ceremony is never meant to be a function with political pomp and gaiety at the taxpayer’s expense.
After ten days of the new MLAs being elected, the new government is not in place and for this the onus is on Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai who has clearly abdicated in his constitutional role.
After assuming the high position as the Custodian of the State, a Governor cannot act as an agent or facilitator of his former political party.
