Drama at Kala Academy

Who would have imagined that an iconic structure like the Kala Academy would see a part of its outdoor theatre collapse? While the chief secretary has ordered an investigation into this unfortunate incident, one hopes that the findings will be made public, and the people responsible brought to book.

The minister whose department the academy comes under should tender a public apology which he owes to the various artistes who teach here, students and others who have made this institution what it is today. In fact, he should go a step further and resign owning responsibility.

Let’s now hope that the structure can be repaired after an open and transparent tender is floated, and suggestions and opinions of the public are also considered. The government claims to be transparent in all its dealings, whether or not they have to do with Art and Culture or any other sphere be in municipal services, roads (Panaji itself is struggling with bad infrastructure).

It’s time for the government and its departments to take their tasks seriously and put its money where its mouth is. The citizens of Goa deserve no less.
