Recently the Goa Public Service Commission had advertised for 10 positions of Block Development Officers, for which it received 4000 applications. Out of 54 candidates who qualified for the final interview, 9 were recommended.
Interestingly, the educational qualifications of the candidates were super-high, ranging from doctorates in commerce, engineers from IITs, postgraduates in life sciences to PhDs in various other subjects.
It can be understood that post Covid, highly qualified hopefuls have made a beeline for government jobs mainly on account of stability in addition to other perks which come with regular appointments, but this begs the question -- of what use is higher education if qualification appropriate jobs cannot be assured by the sarkar.
This is ultimately a huge waste of human resources and India loses out on many fronts.
Being an IIT graduate myself, for the life of me I cannot fathom what an IIT engineer who aced the gruelling two step JEE, the toughest entrance exam in the world and on whom the government has spent lakhs will contribute as a BDO?
Won't the poor chap get frustrated and do a bad job? Employability should be stressed on in our institutes of higher learning which are presently functioning no more than degree factories.
