We are familiar with seed banks. A variety of seeds are preserved scientifically for posterity before they are lost for ever. It is sad that some of our aged old rice seeds are non-existent today. It is also true of Goan varieties of mangoes. We are aware of famous mango preserve (mangado) prepared with Monseratto mangoes.. Mango satt (Ambsatt) derived from pulp of mangoes is another delicious product besides mango preserve in syrup. The king of mangoes, Alfonso, is relished as an exquisite variety, costly and in great demand all over the world. Finally wisdom has dawned on the Agricultural Dept of Goa to have a a gene bank of Goan mango varieties. The Durga Agricultural farm at Chinchinim has come alive at a much publicised inaugural ceremony to plant 32 varieties of Goan indigenous varieties of mangoes. It is hoped that care will be taken to nurture every variety to full growth The next step naturaly is to make grafts easily avaiable for propagation. The climate of Goa is best suited for mango crop and very profitable seasonable crop to augment income of farmers.
