Flooding a manmade disaster

After just 5 days of continuous rain we have seen unprecedented flooding of areas which were never prone to any flooding before even after the torrential rains of yesteryears with only low lying areas like Sanquelim and Bicholim in the north and Paroda in the south and few other places getting affected.

The primary cause of all this is the rampant reclaiming of fields, water bodies, blanket permissions to construct concrete jungles, blocking and destroying the natural flow of water which otherwise used to flow unhindered through its natural passage or the rivers or the sea.

If this goes on unchecked we will come to a Mumbai-like situation where even 3 hours of continuous rain is enough to flood most parts of the city.

It’s time to stop these blanket issue of construction licences to real estate mafia who try to use all the loopholes possible to get their projects cleared without doing a proper topography of the area.

Due to global warming and the melting of the polar ice caps and glaciers the weather patterns are changing worldwide and one need not be a rocket scientist to foresee this phenomenon.
