The Goa Government seems to be planning to regularise illegal encroachments on government and communidade lands. Certain ministershave held senior positions for decades. They manage to stay in power only because of the illegal vote banks they misuse. In my view, these MLAs need these vote banks for power far more than the vote banks need them. If they lose power, they could face prosecution in the many corruption and criminal cases against them, which are currently moving slowly. If we want to clean Goan politics and ensure better governance, it is important to break the link between these corrupt MLAs and their captive vote banks. By planning to legalise encroachments, the government is sending the wrong message. It is unfair to those who follow the law, do not encroach on land, and work hard to buy their properties in a legal and civilised way. If politicians want to reward those who have encroached on comunidade or government land, they should first offer their own properties as replacements.
