An IIT Madras assessment has reportedly identified 18 major defects in the recently renovated Kala Academy, forcing authorities to shut the complex again from August 1 for further repairs. Rs 50 crore have reportedly been spent on the repair works. Kala Academy is one of Goa’s most important cultural spaces, a venue where generations of Goans have experienced theatre, music, dance, festivals, and community life. The collapse of the open-air auditorium roof in July 2023 was an alarming incident. For any cultural centre, especially one hosting large gatherings, structural integrity must be non-negotiable. Periodic independent audits should be institutionalized, not ordered only after a crisis. The dilemma that arises is whether to continue repairing an ageing, possibly compromised structure, or accept that it may be more rational to construct a new, modern edifice that honours the legacy of Kala Academy while meeting today’s standards. It may be possible to retain key design elements or facades while reconstructing the core structure, balancing heritage with safety. Goa can no longer afford half-measures and wastage of public funds. Kala Academy deserves better. So do its artists and the citizens.
