This is with reference to the well-written letter by Arwin Mesquita on July 8 titled "Goans should speak Konkani with pride". I fully agree with the views expressed by Mesquita over the above matter. Well, today, most Goans are indeed seen refusing to speak in their own mother tongue Konkani and communicating only in Hindi with all the non-Goan shopkeepers, vegetable vendors, etc in most Goan markets & in the bargain giving them an upper hand in Goa. Hey, why can't Goans learn a few things from the people of Maharashtra? Why can't they see how the Maharashtrians are taking so much of pride in their own native language and how they are still forcing the people from other states to speak in Marathi. I have nothing against those speaking other languages, especially Hindi but I too do believe that we as Goans should learn to take pride in our own local language just like the Maharashtrians and start speaking only Konkani everywhere, especially with all the non-Goans doing business here in Goan markets to keep our mother tongue Konkani alive.
