Goa reportedly finds itself in the grip of soaring fish prices following the annual fishing ban and the onset of monsoon. For Goans for whom fish is an integral part of the staple diet, this spike in prices is of significant concern. Goans normally switch over to dry fish during the rainy season. The Goa government through the fisheries department needs to make fish available through the fish stalls at a reduced rate during the monsoon. It is learnt that Goa is keen to explore collaboration with Norway in cluster fish farming, sustainable aquaculture and fisheries. A delegation from Goa’s fisheries department reportedly recently visited Norway to study cage farming. Be that as it may, the price of vegetables has also hit the roof in the process turning family budgets upside down. It is learnt that heavy rains have caused massive destruction of vegetable crops in Belagavi, Kholapur and other regions. The Goa government, through the Horticulture department, needs to make vegetables available at a nominal price at its stalls. To make things worse Goans are now staring at a considerable hike in power tariffs by 3.5 per cent. Will Goans ever get a respite from price rise?
