According to data released by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), Goa is grappling with a high unemployment rate of 15.9 per cent which is almost two times the national average that stands at 7.8 per cent. The numbers should be a worrying sign for the government. The Opposition has repeatedly slammed the government for failing to provide jobs. It is also pertinent to note that Goans are hesitant to take up menial jobs which only adds to the problem. Shack owners in the South have claimed that Goans are reluctant to take up such jobs which are then given to migrants.
Recently, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant blamed the youth for only seeking government jobs and not opting for jobs provided by the private sector. In January, Damodar Kochkar, President of the Goa State Industries Association (GSAI) said that some Goans are not even willing to take up blue-collar jobs. However, the reasons here vary from transportation to timings. Unemployment numbers will continue to remain high if the attitude of locals doesn't change and the government doesn't come up with stronger measures.
