This development is not an isolated incident. It is a symptom of a larger, more troubling trend: the steady demographic transformation of Goa, driven by an unchecked influx of migrants and facilitated by political patronage. According to the 2011 Census, migrants already constituted 18.5 per cent of Goa’s population, and this figure has likely grown significantly. The boldness with which external groups now stake political claims”without any rootedness in Goa’s ethos”is alarming. This situation is exacerbated by the Centre’s failure to grant Goa Special Status, which could have empowered the state to regulate land ownership, employment, and settlement patterns. Without such safeguards, Goa remains vulnerable to demographic dilution and cultural erosion. It is time for Goans to unite and demand: Goa is not just a piece of land”it is a living heritage. Let us not barter it away.
