This is with reference to the news report “Govt to disconnect power and water supply to illegal houses” (TGE, Nov. 6). In the first place, it is surprising that the Goa government has remained a mute spectator all these years to the number of illegal houses that have mushroomed and continue to increase across the state.
Does the state government not have enough laws to curb these illegalities instead of waiting for the High Court directives to cut off power and water supply as a last resort? These problems would not have arisen had our village panchayats and municipalities acted on time and nipped these structures in the bud by having them demolished. Or, is it that their duties are only restricted to issuing construction licences to builders?
