The killing of a parking attendant by tourists at Anjuna is yet another case that highlights the quality of tourists that come into the State.
A few days ago, tourists were seen with bikes and cars on a beach which is prohibited by law.
A few months back, women from Surla village obtained a ban on liquor sale due to harassment from drunken tourists. There being no police outposts in most villages the same had to be obtained from the Collector.
There have been several such cases and those of drunken driving by tourists too.
Recently, Union Home Minister Amit Shah who was in Goa to lay the foundation stone for the forensic science college at Dharbandora, said the Centre plans to promote tourism in Goa in a big way. He also announced loans of Rs 10 lakh for tourism-related activities Rs 1 lakh for tourist guides.
This can be great news for our State. However, there should be checks and balances in the tourism industry. Strict standard operating procedures should be enforced for all tourists visiting the State.
Unruly tourists, drunken driving and breaking the law should not be taken lightly.
If this is not tackled now, Goa will soon turn into another Pattaya.
